Where it came from
The BRICK KICKS Fall 1988 issue emerged during the late eighties as part of a niche print culture dedicated to the burgeoning hobby of building block customization and modular play. Published at a time when plastic construction sets were moving from generic toy bin status into a recognized subculture, the magazine aimed to provide enthusiasts with structural blueprints and modifications that went beyond official corporate instructions.
The issue is characterized by its gritty, DIY aesthetic, reflecting the design sensibilities of the independent zine movement of the late eighties. It was curated by enthusiasts who prioritized architectural complexity and creative repurposing, aiming to challenge the standardized building methods of the era. While it did not receive mainstream critical review, it became a foundational document for early collectors who valued the technical documentation and community-driven modifications found within its pages.
