BRICK KICKS Issue No. 1

BRICK KICKS Issue No. 1, released in late 1987 under the identifier BK01WIN1987-1, emerged during the late eighties surge of niche enthusiast publications centered on plastic construction systems. It was conceived as a grassroots effort to bridge the gap between burgeoning adult collectors and the increasingly complex product lines being released by major building block manufacturers at the time. The publication aimed to provide a structured platform for sharing modified build techniques and tracking emerging secondary market trends that were not yet being addressed by mainstream hobbyist magazines.

The editorial direction for this debut issue prioritized technical diagrams and user-submitted assembly challenges, emphasizing a utilitarian aesthetic that reflected the functional focus of the era. Designed by a small group of independent hobbyists, the layout sought to balance instructional clarity with a communal tone intended to cultivate a sense of shared discovery. While the circulation was modest and limited primarily to regional hobby shops, it is historically significant for its role in formalizing the hobbyist community before the advent of the commercial internet.
