Where it came from
BrickJournal, founded by Joe Meno in 2005, emerged during a transitional period for the LEGO enthusiast community when digital fan engagement began to formalize into dedicated publications. Issue 5 was released as part of the magazine's early phase, aiming to bridge the gap between casual builders and the sophisticated adult fan of LEGO (AFOL) community by highlighting complex custom creations and the technical processes behind them.
The editorial focus of this era was heavily influenced by the rise of online community galleries, seeking to document the work of prolific builders who were pushing the medium beyond standard retail sets. Design-wise, the magazine utilized a clean, enthusiast-led aesthetic that prioritized clear photography and accessible interviews, which were instrumental in establishing BrickJournal as the primary print authority for the hobby at the time.
