Where it came from
The LEGO set 135-1, known as the Mobile Crane, was released in 1977 as part of the Expert Builder series, which would later be rebranded as LEGO Technic. This set arrived during a pivotal period for the company as they shifted toward more complex, functional models aimed at older children and engineering enthusiasts. Designed to highlight the potential of the new system of beams, gears, and pins, the set offered a more sophisticated building experience that prioritized mechanical movement over traditional brick-based aesthetics.
The crane was part of the inaugural wave of Technic products that introduced a more industrial and technical design language to the LEGO catalog. It featured a recognizable yellow and black color scheme that became synonymous with the line for many years. Because it was one of the first sets to utilize the brand-new Technic construction system, it was received as a significant innovation in educational play, successfully bridging the gap between a standard toy and a functional model kit.
