Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the inaugural wave of the LEGO Friends theme, the birthday cake model was designed to establish the core play patterns of the new line. The set was conceived as an entry-level build, focusing on the vibrant, pastel-heavy aesthetic that defined the Heartlake City series and differentiated it from the more military or sci-fi themes prevalent in the brand’s portfolio at the time.
The design utilizes a rounded construction technique to mimic a tiered pastry, incorporating small, bright elements to appeal to younger builders. Upon its introduction, the Friends line faced some scrutiny regarding gendered marketing, yet this specific set was widely praised by the enthusiast community for its clever use of basic bricks to achieve a recognizable, decorative shape.
