City Road Tape

The City Road Tape, released under the set number 5007802-1, was produced by the LEGO Group as a functional accessory designed to complement their broader City building sets. Released as part of a move to offer more versatile, non-rigid alternatives to traditional plastic baseplates, this adhesive tape was engineered to allow users to create temporary or permanent road systems across various surfaces. The design concept focused on the portability and flexibility of the material, aiming to lower the barrier for children to expand their play environments beyond the constraints of standard building plates.

While the concept of flexible road surfaces was well-received for its ingenuity and departure from traditional, molded plastic, the execution faced mixed feedback from the collector community. The tactile nature of the adhesive tape meant that once applied, it was difficult to reposition, and it lacked the structural height of traditional LEGO plates. Designed by the internal creative team at LEGO, it represents a specific period of experimentation where the company sought to integrate play into more unconventional domestic spaces, though it has since been superseded by the newer modular road plate system.
