Where it came from
Released in 2015 as the flagship set for the Lego City theme, the City Square (60097) was designed to serve as a comprehensive centerpiece for the broader Lego City layout. It was conceived during a period when the theme was focusing on high-density urban environments, aiming to provide a modular experience that included a diverse range of functions, such as a dealership, a coffee shop, and a tram system, meant to mirror the hustle of a modern metropolitan center.
The set was noted for its inclusion of a tram, a feature that was rarely seen in the modular building style of City sets at the time, alongside a selection of minifigures that offered a wide variety of occupations. The design language leaned into bright, primary colors and interactive play features, such as the crane and the dealership interior, which were well-received by the building community for offering high playability and a solid foundation for city expansion.
