Where it came from
Cole’s Dragon, set 70599-1, was released in 2016 as part of the LEGO Ninjago theme's 'Skybound' subtheme. The design emerged during a period when the Ninjago narrative focused on the ninja team battling the Djinn Nadakhan. This specific model was designed as an entry-level, accessible set, intended to provide fans with a core member of the ninja team alongside a simplified version of their elemental dragon companion.
The set was created to capture the aesthetic of the Skybound series, featuring the dark-skinned ninja Cole paired with a dragon constructed in a compact, articulated style. Its design relies on a smaller parts count to ensure affordability while maintaining the high-fantasy dragon aesthetic synonymous with the Ninjago line. Upon its release, it was well-received by younger builders and collectors looking for manageable, affordable additions to their burgeoning Ninjago dragon collections.
