Where it came from
The Modular2-1, often referred to by enthusiasts as the inaugural release in the niche 'Construction Modular' series, was introduced as a conceptual exercise in geometric architecture. Developed by independent design collectives in the early 2010s, it emerged during a period when interlocking brick systems were being repurposed for adult-oriented, display-focused hobbyist builds. The intent behind its creation was to provide a rigorous, repeatable kit that favored clean lines and structural integrity over traditional minifigure-scale playability.
The design of the Modular2-1 is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, emphasizing modularity through standardized connecting plates that allow for seamless integration with subsequent sets in the series. The lead design team focused on a muted color palette to highlight the interplay of negative space and shadow within the structure. Upon its release, the set was noted by architectural hobbyist publications for its departure from franchise-heavy themes, earning a dedicated, albeit small, following of collectors who appreciated its commitment to brutalist-inspired form.
