Where it came from
Released in 1980, the 7857 Crossing set was a pivotal component of the LEGO 12V train system, an era defined by electrified tracks that allowed for more dynamic play. The set was designed to provide a realistic trackside detail for layouts, featuring a functional crossing gate and signal mechanism that integrated seamlessly into the modular track layout of the period.
The design aesthetic reflected the clean, functional technical style characteristic of LEGO’s late 1970s and early 1980s engineering focus. By incorporating a crossing arm and light-signaling components, the set aimed to bridge the gap between simple toy trains and the more sophisticated, realistic model railroading experience that the 12V system was designed to cultivate for young builders and hobbyists.
