Where it came from
The 4520 Curved Rails set was released in 1991 as part of the LEGO Trains theme, specifically designed to support the 9V electrical rail system introduced during that era. This system transitioned the company away from the previous 4.5V battery-operated or 12V electrified rail setups, allowing for a more streamlined and reliable power transmission through metal-plated track sections. The set was created to provide builders with the essential components needed to expand their track layouts beyond simple ovals, enabling more complex curves and loops.
The design of these rails reflects the functionalist aesthetic common to late-20th-century LEGO engineering, where durability and modular compatibility were paramount. By standardizing the geometry of the curves, the designers ensured that all 9V-compatible trains could navigate the tracks smoothly without derailment. While the set itself is a utilitarian accessory, it remains a foundational piece for collectors of the 9V era, appreciated for its role in the evolution of the brand's train platform and its enduring cross-compatibility with subsequent track systems.
