Where it came from
The LEGO Dragon, set 40098, was released in 2014 as part of a seasonal promotion celebrating the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac cycle, although the model itself depicts a stylized dragon. It was distributed primarily through official brand retail channels during the Lunar New Year period, serving as a limited-availability promotional gift intended to honor cultural traditions within the global marketplace.
Designed by the internal LEGO creative team, the set employs a compact, articulated aesthetic characteristic of polybag and small-box seasonal builds. The design focuses on fluid movement through the use of ball joints and specialized wing elements, aiming to capture the essence of a traditional mythical creature within a restricted piece count. It was generally well-received by collectors for its clever use of parts and the distinct aesthetic of its head assembly.
