Where it came from
Released in 2024 as part of the LEGO Icons line, this set depicts the iconic scene of Goku atop Shenron, the wish-granting dragon from the Dragon Ball franchise. It was designed to celebrate the enduring legacy of Akira Toriyama's manga and anime series, which first debuted in the 1980s and has since become a global cultural phenomenon. The set aims to capture the fluid, serpentine aesthetic of Shenron using a modular building approach, balancing the complexity of the dragon's scales with the character-focused detail of the minifigure.
The design team focused on dynamic display potential, incorporating a brick-built stand that allows the dragon to appear as if it is winding through the air. Upon its release, it was received as a respectful tribute to the source material, noted for its vibrant color palette and the inclusion of the Dragon Balls. By situating this set within the Icons theme, the developers signaled its intended market as adult fans of the series who seek sophisticated desk or shelf displays rather than play-oriented structures.
