Dressing Up

Released in 1997 as part of the Lego Scala line, set 3101-1, Dressing Up, was designed to target a demographic that Lego felt was underserved by its traditional construction-focused themes at the time. The Scala theme departed from the standard interlocking brick system, instead featuring articulated, doll-like figures and specialized furniture pieces. This set, which included a vanity and various accessories, reflected an attempt to bridge the gap between traditional construction toys and the fashion-doll market popular in the late 1990s.

The aesthetic of the Dressing Up set, characterized by its pastel color palette and modular, non-standardized plastic components, was indicative of Lego's experimental design phase during this period. While the theme was initially marketed as a creative outlet for doll-house play, it faced mixed reception from long-term enthusiasts of the brand, who were accustomed to the systemic compatibility of standard bricks. Despite this, the set remains a notable artifact of Lego's mid-90s effort to diversify its product range before the company pivoted back toward its core brick-based identity in the early 2000s.
