Where it came from
Released in 2019 as part of the LEGO Star Wars BOOST series, the Droid Commander set was designed to merge traditional brick-based construction with interactive robotics. LEGO developed this kit to provide a programmable experience, utilizing the proprietary BOOST Move Hub and companion app to allow users to bring R2-D2, the Gonk Droid, and the Mouse Droid to life with movement and sound, reflecting a broader shift in the toy industry toward STEM-focused play.
The design team focused on reconfigurable modularity, ensuring that the core internal components could be transferred between the three distinct droid chassis. While the set was well-received by fans of educational technology and LEGO hobbyists for its integration of motor sensors and coding logic, it was discontinued after a relatively short production run, becoming a notable entry for collectors interested in the intersection of digital play and the Star Wars franchise.
