Where it came from
The Droideka, set 911840-1, was released as a promotional polybag set in 2015 to coincide with the broader LEGO Star Wars line. Designed to represent the iconic destroyer droids from the Trade Federation, the model was engineered to capture the distinct rolling and tripod-firing configurations of the cinematic original. By utilizing a compact assembly of Technic and System pieces, it serves as an accessible miniature iteration of a complex mechanical design.
This specific build was produced during a period where LEGO leaned into smaller, functional polybags to accompany larger waves of Star Wars merchandise. The design team focused on balancing the limited piece count with the necessity of folding the droid into its spherical form, a feature that remains a signature aspect of the character's depiction. It was generally well-received by collectors for its clever use of limited parts to achieve a recognizable silhouette.
