Where it came from
The Droid Fighter, set 7111-1, was released in 1999 as part of the inaugural LEGO Star Wars wave. It was created to coincide with the theatrical debut of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, marking the first time the LEGO Group produced licensed intellectual property. The design reflects the challenge of capturing the Vulture Droid's unique insectoid, articulated aesthetic using the limited parts palette available at the time, resulting in a model that functions both in flight and walking modes.
Designed by early members of the LEGO Star Wars creative team, the set was intended to provide an affordable entry point into the new theme. It utilized a mix of dark blue and yellow elements to represent the Trade Federation color scheme. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans and critics alike for its clever use of hinge bricks to simulate the droid's transformation, establishing a precedent for the mechanical ingenuity expected in the long-running series.
