Where it came from
Drome Racers for PlayStation 2, released in 2002, was part of a cross-media marketing strategy by the LEGO Group to expand its footprint in the video game market. The game was developed by Attention to Detail and published by Electronic Arts, serving as a companion piece to the LEGO Racers line of building sets. It featured a futuristic, high-speed aesthetic that aimed to capture the intensity of competitive racing, distinguishing itself from the more whimsical tone of the original 1999 LEGO Racers title.
The game design focused on a blend of arcade-style racing and modular vehicle customization, allowing players to build cars from various chassis and component parts. While it sought to capitalize on the popularity of the LEGO Racers construction sets, critical reception was mixed; reviewers generally praised the customization options and technical performance for the era but noted that the gameplay felt repetitive compared to contemporary racing titles. Over time, it has become a nostalgic artifact for fans of early 2000s console gaming and the specific era of experimental LEGO licensed software.
