Where it came from
Released in 1989, the DUPLO Family set 2608-1 reflects the core design philosophy of the DUPLO line, which LEGO introduced in 1969 to offer a safer, larger-scale building experience for toddlers. This specific set was part of the 'Basic' sub-theme, intended to facilitate open-ended imaginative play by providing a foundational set of figures representing a nuclear family, a common pedagogical tool for early childhood development during that era.
The figures featured in this set exhibit the classic, simplified aesthetics characteristic of late-1980s DUPLO character design. By prioritizing durable, oversized plastic elements that are easy for young children to grasp, the designers aimed to encourage fine motor skill development while maintaining compatibility with the existing LEGO system. The set was generally well-received by parents and educators for its simplicity and the durability of the high-quality molded ABS plastic.
