Where it came from
The Duplo Family, Asian set (5090-1) was released by the LEGO Group in the late 1990s as part of a series of educational figures designed to foster inclusive play. The set was created to reflect global diversity, allowing children to construct domestic scenes that mirrored a variety of cultural backgrounds. During this era, LEGO sought to expand its Duplo line beyond traditional building blocks by introducing more human-centric elements to support early childhood social and emotional development.
The figures feature the hallmark chunky, rounded aesthetic of the Duplo system, specifically scaled for toddlers to handle easily. The design focused on universal, friendly expressions that encourage open-ended roleplay. While these sets were relatively simple in construction, they were well-received by parents and educators who valued the effort to provide representative toys that could be integrated into existing Duplo city or house builds.
