Where it came from
The 1919-1 Duplo set was released in 1980 as a promotional item, primarily serving as an introduction to the Duplo system for younger children. During this period, the Lego Group aimed to solidify the Duplo brand as a distinct, safe, and compatible building experience for toddlers, utilizing larger, chunky bricks that were easier for small hands to grasp than standard Lego elements.
The design of this specific promotional set reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1970s and early 1980s toy packaging, featuring simple, primary-colored brick configurations. Like many promotional items from that era, it was intended to demonstrate the versatility of the system in a compact form factor, relying on classic design principles of the time to encourage early childhood development through tactile, open-ended play.
