Where it came from
Released in the early 1990s as part of the LEGO Educational division, the Early Structures set (9660-1) was designed to introduce young learners to the fundamental principles of engineering and architecture. The set provided a tactile, hands-on medium for exploring structural integrity, weight distribution, and vertical stability through the use of classic brick components and specialized building elements.
The design philosophy behind the Dacta line, which included Early Structures, focused on open-ended learning rather than rigid, character-driven narrative play. By utilizing a neutral aesthetic and durable storage housing, the set was intended for classroom settings where it could be reused across multiple generations of students, earning a reputation among educators as a reliable staple for STEM-oriented primary education.
