Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the inaugural wave of the Lego Friends theme, Emma's Splash Pool was designed to establish the aesthetic and narrative focus of the new product line. The Friends sets marked a departure from the traditional minifigure scale, introducing the more stylized mini-doll figure alongside a brighter, pastel-heavy color palette intended to expand the brand's appeal within the girls' toy market.
The set was conceptualized by the Lego design team to emphasize interactive play through social scenarios, featuring Emma and her pool accessories. While some critics initially expressed concern regarding the gender-coded marketing approach, the set and its contemporaries were well received by the target demographic, effectively anchoring the Friends franchise and setting the design language for over a decade of subsequent releases.
