Where it came from
Released in 2000 as part of the LEGO Studios line, the Fighter Plane Attack set (7198-1) was designed to bridge the gap between traditional building sets and the burgeoning interest in amateur digital filmmaking. During this period, the LEGO Group sought to capitalize on the increasing accessibility of home computing, including elements like a camera mount and specialized minifigures to encourage children to create their own stop-motion animations.
The set features a distinctive red fighter jet design, reflecting a cinematic, stylized aesthetic rather than a strict adherence to historical realism. It was marketed alongside other sets in the Studios range, which often featured movie-themed scenarios. The reception was modest, as the set is now primarily remembered by enthusiasts as a curiosity from a transitional era where the company experimented with integrating physical play with early multimedia technology.
