Where it came from
Released in 2002, the Final Duel I set was part of the initial wave of LEGO Star Wars products dedicated to the prequel trilogy. It was designed to capture the climactic confrontation between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul within the Theed power generator complex as seen in The Phantom Menace. The set focused on playability, featuring a modular platform design that allowed builders to recreate the movie's acrobatic lightsaber sequences.
The design team emphasized dynamic action features, including a rotating platform and a collapsing bridge, which were hallmark elements of early 2000s LEGO play sets. While the set was met with appreciation for providing key minifigures of the main combatants, it is often remembered for its relatively simple structural build compared to the more complex architectural dioramas LEGO would release in later decades. It stands as a significant piece of the early Star Wars line, marking a period where the brand was rapidly expanding its cinematic recreations.
