Where it came from
The Forest Picnic set, released under the Duplo theme in the late 1980s, was designed to appeal to younger children through simple, thematic play. As part of a broader push to introduce toddlers to the brand, LEGO focused on robust, oversized bricks that were easy for small hands to grasp and manipulate, emphasizing wholesome, nature-oriented scenarios that mirrored real-world experiences like dining outdoors.
The design of the set reflects the aesthetic priorities of the era, featuring a distinct color palette and molded animal figures that were meant to encourage imaginative storytelling. While individual design attributions for specific early Duplo sets are rarely credited to single artists, the series was well-received by parents and educators for its durability and its ability to foster fine motor skills without the choking hazards posed by smaller systems.
