Where it came from
The 1110-1 Four Locomotive Wheels set was released in 1966 as part of the early LEGO supplementary range. During this period, the company was transitioning from basic building bricks to more specialized components that allowed for functional movement, reflecting a strategic shift toward encouraging children to build vehicles and mechanical models rather than static structures.
The design of these wheels is characterized by a simple, sturdy aesthetic consistent with mid-1960s plastic molding techniques. As a utilitarian accessory pack, the set was marketed to expand the capabilities of existing train sets and custom locomotive builds. It was received as a practical foundational element for the growing LEGO community, helping to standardize the scale for rail-based creations of the era.
