Where it came from
Released by the LEGO Group in 2022 as part of the City theme, the Freight Train (set 60336-1) was designed to serve as a modern centerpiece for the company's long-running track-based model system. The set was engineered to integrate with the LEGO Powered Up ecosystem, allowing users to control the train's speed and direction remotely via Bluetooth. This functionality reflects a deliberate push by designers to blend traditional construction play with contemporary smart technology, ensuring the model appeals to both younger builders and older enthusiasts interested in automation.
The design of the 60336-1 reflects the aesthetic conventions of modern European rail transport, featuring a sleek locomotive alongside specialized cars for container transport and vehicle hauling. It was developed to provide a comprehensive building experience, including a reach stacker and an electric car, which encourages collaborative play scenarios. Upon its release, the set was well-received for its inclusion of functional elements like a working crane and a multi-car train, marking a significant update to the City theme's rolling stock roster.
