Where it came from
Released in 2022 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group, the 10497 Galaxy Explorer serves as a modern homage to the iconic 497 Galaxy Explorer first launched in 1979. This updated set was designed to capture the nostalgic essence of the original Classic Space era while incorporating contemporary building techniques, such as refined color palettes and more detailed interior assembly, to meet the expectations of modern adult collectors.
The design process for this set, led by LEGO designer Mike Psiaki, focused on balancing fidelity to the original aesthetic with enhanced structural integrity. By maintaining the distinct gray, blue, and yellow color scheme and the classic 'trans-yellow' canopy, the set evokes the spirit of the late 20th-century space theme. Upon its release, it was warmly received by the fan community as a successful tribute to one of the most recognizable toy designs in the company's history.
