Where it came from
The LEGO Atari 2600 (set 10306) includes this brick-built replica of the iconic CX40 joystick controller. Released in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Atari, the set was designed to evoke nostalgia for the early home console era. The controller was engineered to include a mechanical function that mimics the movement of the original hardware, reflecting LEGO's focus on creating immersive building experiences for adult fans of classic technology.
The design process sought to replicate the angular, utilitarian aesthetic of the 1980s joystick while utilizing standard building elements. It was received positively by the gaming community and AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO) circles, who praised the attention to detail and the thematic integration of the controller with the larger console display. The item stands as a tribute to the simplicity of early interface design in consumer electronics.
