Where it came from
The 494-2 Gates and Fence set was introduced by LEGO in 1960 as part of their expanding line of building accessories. During this era, the company was transitioning from wooden toys to the plastic interlocking brick system that would define its global identity. This specific set was designed to enhance the playability of the popular town-building themes, providing builders with structural elements that moved beyond basic masonry to include decorative architectural features like garden gates and picket fencing.
The design of the set reflected the mid-century aesthetic of the time, characterized by clean lines and a utilitarian approach to scale modeling. As a standalone accessory pack, it was marketed to supplement larger base sets, allowing children to enclose their creative layouts. While individual parts from this set have become highly sought after by historical collectors, the original white molded plastic components are noted for their specific manufacturing techniques common to the early LEGO System of Play era.
