Where it came from
Released in 1968, set 700/0-1, known as the Gift Package, represents one of the earliest iterations of branding for what would become the iconic LEGO system. Produced during a period when the company was expanding its international distribution, this package was designed to offer a curated selection of basic bricks to new users, effectively serving as an introductory kit to the universal building system.
The set features a utilitarian design aesthetic characteristic of late 1960s toy packaging, focusing on simplicity and versatility rather than the narrative-driven themes that would dominate later decades. It was received as a foundational tool for creative play, emphasizing the modular compatibility of the bricks, a design philosophy that remains the core of the product line today.
