Where it came from
The 700_4-3 Gift Package is a distinct piece of LEGO history, released in the late 1940s during a pivotal era for the company. As one of the early precursors to the modern building system, this set reflects the transition from wooden toys to the introduction of plastic 'Automatic Binding Bricks'. It was marketed as a foundational building set, intended to spark architectural creativity in children by providing a modular assortment of early bricks.
The design of these early packages was simple and utilitarian, emphasizing the structural versatility of the bricks rather than complex thematic narratives. Because the plastic brick system was still in its infancy, these sets were often distributed in modest cardboard packaging, reflecting the mid-century European manufacturing aesthetic. They were received primarily as educational toys, laying the groundwork for the global success of the LEGO System of Play that would follow in subsequent decades.
