Where it came from
The Heartlake Vet set, released in 2012, was a cornerstone of the inaugural launch of the Lego Friends theme. Designed to capture a more narrative-driven play experience, the set reflects Lego's strategic shift toward character-based storytelling. It introduced the minidoll figure, a departure from the traditional minifigure, which was specifically engineered to allow for greater anatomical detail and wardrobe versatility within a suburban, lifestyle-oriented setting.
The design emphasizes a pastel color palette and modular architecture, characteristic of the Heartlake City aesthetic intended to appeal to a demographic previously underserved by Lego's core offerings. Upon its debut, the theme sparked significant industry discourse regarding gender-targeted toy design, yet the set was commercially successful and became a foundational piece for the expansion of the Friends franchise, establishing the domestic and professional settings that would define the line for over a decade.
