Where it came from
The Butterfly Beauty Shop, set number 3187-1, was released in 2012 as part of the initial launch of the LEGO Friends theme. Developed by the LEGO Group to capture a different demographic within the construction toy market, the theme introduced the 'mini-doll' figure, which featured a more realistic proportion and aesthetic than the traditional minifigure. This particular set focuses on a storefront setting, utilizing a bright, pastel-heavy color palette intended to evoke a boutique atmosphere.
The design of the Butterfly Beauty Shop reflects the broader architectural style established for the early Friends line, emphasizing modularity and accessory-heavy play. It includes a variety of specialized elements like hair accessories, lipstick bottles, and a rotating chair, which were designed to encourage role-playing scenarios. Upon its release, the set became a representative piece for the theme's introduction, noted for its emphasis on interior detail and stylized suburban retail play.
