Where it came from
The LEGO Friends 'Ice Cream Shop' (set 562503-1) was released as part of the expansion of the popular Friends theme, which LEGO introduced in 2012 to offer a more character-driven building experience centered around the fictional Heartlake City. This specific set was designed to capture the aesthetic of a classic neighborhood sweet shop, utilizing the distinct pastel color palette and modular-style play features that define the Friends line, emphasizing social interaction and domestic roleplay scenarios.
The design process for the Friends series was led by a dedicated LEGO team that conducted extensive ethnographic research with young builders to understand their preferences for storytelling and character-centric play. The Ice Cream Shop is a representative example of this approach, focusing on expressive mini-doll figures rather than traditional minifigures to foster a sense of relatability and emotional engagement among collectors and builders alike.
