Imperial Hotel

The LEGO Architecture Imperial Hotel set, released in 2013, commemorates Frank Lloyd Wright’s second Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, a landmark of 20th-century design. Wright was commissioned to create a structure that could withstand Japan's frequent seismic activity, resulting in a revolutionary floating foundation and an iconic, fortress-like aesthetic that incorporated Mayan Revival influences alongside traditional Japanese motifs. The hotel stood as a masterpiece of architectural endurance until its controversial demolition in 1968, though its historic lobby was famously preserved and relocated to the Meiji-mura museum.

As part of the Architecture series, this set was designed to capture the structural complexity and layered geometric patterns of Wright's original vision. The design process focused on utilizing modular techniques to replicate the hotel's distinctive terracotta detailing and intricate roof lines at a reduced scale. Upon its release, the model was well-received by fans of modern architecture for its faithful representation of a building that has long been a subject of historical fascination, serving as a contemplative tribute to Wright's innovative approach to both style and structural engineering.
