Where it came from
Released by the LEGO Group in 2018, the Imperial Landing Craft (set 75221) was part of a mid-year wave celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise. The set revisits the iconic shuttle design first seen in A New Hope, aiming to provide a more accurate and robust building experience than its predecessor from 2007. It was designed to cater to both display collectors and younger builders, incorporating folding wings and a detailed interior that could seat several minifigures.
The design team focused on streamlining the craft's distinct aesthetic, utilizing modern building techniques to achieve the angular, industrial silhouette of the Imperial fleet. It was received generally well by the community for its inclusion of a unique Obi-Wan Kenobi minifigure and a refreshed Sandtrooper squad. While it occupied a specific niche within the Star Wars line, it stands as a clear representation of the transition toward more complex, screen-accurate vehicle designs favored by LEGO in the late 2010s.
