Where it came from
The Karaoke Mermaid (43108-5) was released as part of the LEGO Vidiyo theme in 2021. The Vidiyo line represented a collaborative experiment between LEGO and Universal Music Group, aiming to bridge physical building blocks with a proprietary digital app experience. This theme was designed to allow children to create music videos using augmented reality, featuring iconic minifigures that served as both physical collectibles and digital characters within the app.
The character design reflects the upbeat, neon-infused aesthetic prevalent throughout the Vidiyo collection, which leaned heavily into pop, dance, and electronic music subcultures. The minifigure was intended to capture a whimsical, stage-ready persona, complete with unique molded elements and printed accessories. While the broader Vidiyo concept was short-lived due to market shifts in interactive play, pieces like the Karaoke Mermaid remain notable examples of LEGO’s attempt to integrate social media-style short-form content creation into their traditional toy ecosystem.
