Where it came from
Released in 2013 as part of the LEGO Castle theme, the King's Castle (70404) served as the flagship structure for a revitalized era of medieval play. Designed to evoke the classic aesthetic of 1980s and 90s castle sets while utilizing updated building techniques, the model features a modular design, a functioning drawbridge, and a collapsing tower wall. Its creation was intended to re-engage long-time fans of the theme with a focus on playability, garrisoned soldiers, and a clear conflict between the Lion Knights and the Dragon Knights.
The set was received as a nostalgic return to form, balancing structural detail with a sturdy, toy-like construction that allowed for varied configurations. While it diverged from the complex, display-oriented builds found in the later Icons series, it remains respected for its effective use of printed elements and its commitment to the traditional 'good guys versus bad guys' narrative common to the Castle series of the mid-2010s.
