Where it came from
The LEGO Koi model, released in 2021 as set 81000-1, was a pilot project developed through the LEGO FORMA line. This series was designed to explore organic, kinetic shapes using plastic elements combined with printed skin overlays. The project emerged from the LEGO Creative Play Lab, an internal incubator focused on testing unconventional building experiences that blur the line between traditional construction sets and tactile kinetic sculptures.
The design of the Koi focuses on fluid, lifelike movement, utilizing a gear-based spine mechanism that mimics the undulating swim pattern of a fish. The artistic styling of the skin was inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints, aiming to create a display piece that appealed to adult hobbyists looking for meditative construction projects. Upon its release, it was well-received by the design community for its clever mechanical engineering and its departure from standard architectural or vehicle-based kits.
