Where it came from
The Lakitu Sky World expansion set, released in 2021, represents a specialized addition to the interactive LEGO Super Mario product line. Designed by the LEGO Group in collaboration with Nintendo, the set was developed to expand the modular play experience by introducing a dynamic, rotating mechanism that simulates the character Lakitu’s signature aerial traversal. This set is part of a broader technological initiative that integrates physical building blocks with digital gameplay components, specifically requiring a Mario or Luigi starter course figure to operate the interactive elements.
The set was conceived as a mid-range expansion to provide fans with iconic antagonists and terrain features from the Super Mario franchise. The design team focused on replicating the classic cloud-dwelling aesthetic of Lakitu, utilizing a gear-based system that allows users to spin the platform and interact with the included enemy figures. Upon release, the set was received as a functional addition to the ecosystem, praised for its mechanical ingenuity in translating two-dimensional platforming obstacles into a tangible, physical format.
