Where it came from
The LEGO Icons Land Rover Classic Defender 90 (set 10317-1) was released in 2023 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the legendary British off-roader. Designed to honor the utilitarian heritage of the 1983 Defender, the set captures the vehicle's rugged aesthetic, featuring functional steering, working suspension, and a detailed interior. It was developed to appeal specifically to adult builders and automotive enthusiasts who appreciate the industrial design and historical significance of the Land Rover marque.
In designing the model, LEGO creators prioritized the iconic, boxy silhouette that defines the Defender, incorporating custom elements like the roof rack, snorkel, and winches to offer two distinct build configurations. The set was met with positive reception for its balance of displayability and mechanical play features, effectively transitioning the spirit of the full-scale vehicle into the medium of interlocking plastic bricks. It remains a notable entry in the Icons series, recognized for its commitment to technical accuracy and nostalgic appeal.
