Where it came from
Released in 2013, the Legends of Chima Playmat (850776-1) was produced by the LEGO Group to coincide with the launch of the Legends of Chima theme, a high-fantasy property centered on animal tribes competing for the powerful energy source known as Chi. The mat was designed as a branded play surface to support the physical action-figure-based gameplay and construction sets introduced during the franchise's debut, offering a thematic environment for children to arrange their builds.
The graphic design reflects the vibrant, elemental aesthetics of the Chima world, featuring colorful landscapes that denote the diverse habitats of the lion, eagle, and crocodile tribes. It was primarily distributed as a promotional item or accessory through LEGO brand retail channels, aimed at immersing younger consumers in the narrative world-building that LEGO employed to differentiate this original intellectual property from their licensed themes.
