Where it came from
LEGO World Builder, launched in 2020, represents a significant shift in the company's approach to community-driven content. Designed as a digital collaborative platform, it was created to bridge the gap between amateur creators and the LEGO Group's internal development teams. By allowing users to pitch their own stories and universes, the project sought to democratize the creative process and identify new intellectual property for potential physical sets, animated series, or books.
The platform was developed in partnership with Tongal, a creative crowd-sourcing agency, to facilitate a global ecosystem of world-building. Rather than adhering to a single design aesthetic, the project emphasized narrative depth and lore-building. It was received as a bold experiment in open innovation, signaling a move toward decentralized content creation where the fans themselves define the scope of upcoming themes and media extensions.
