Released in 2015, the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack 71171-1 marked Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's entry into the toys-to-life genre, a market then dominated by Skylanders and Disney Infinity. The project was developed by Traveller's Tales, the studio long responsible for the LEGO video game franchise, with the design goal of merging physical brick building with digital gameplay. Unlike its competitors, the set required players to physically assemble the LEGO Toy Pad and the included portal gateway, emphasizing the tactile nature of the brand.

The starter pack included the base game, the USB Toy Pad, and minifigures of Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle, along with a buildable Batmobile. The design philosophy sought to bridge disparate intellectual properties under the Warner Bros. umbrella, ranging from DC Comics to The Lord of the Rings. While critics praised the authentic LEGO humor and the unique physical interaction required to solve in-game puzzles, the high entry cost and the complexity of the portal-based mechanics led to a mixed commercial reception, ultimately resulting in the discontinuation of the project in 2017.
