Released in 2015, the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack (71173-1) represented The LEGO Group's venture into the 'toys-to-life' video game genre, a market then dominated by titles like Skylanders and Disney Infinity. The project was developed by Traveller's Tales, the long-standing partner behind the LEGO game series, and designed to bridge physical construction with digital gameplay through the use of a proprietary USB-connected 'Toy Pad.' By requiring players to physically rearrange LEGO elements on the board to solve in-game puzzles, the developers sought to distinguish the title from its competitors by emphasizing the tactile nature of the brand.

The set includes the base game, the Toy Pad, and minifigures of Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle, along with a buildable Batmobile. The aesthetic was built upon a cross-franchise conceit, allowing intellectual properties as diverse as The Lord of the Rings, DC Comics, and The LEGO Movie to interact within a unified digital environment.
