Where it came from
The LEGO Soft Starter Set, designated 9020, was released during the late 1980s as part of the LEGO Educational division. Designed specifically for preschool environments and early childhood development centers, the set was intended to introduce toddlers to the fundamental concepts of construction and motor skills. By utilizing larger, softer components that were compatible with standard LEGO DUPLO bricks, the system aimed to bridge the gap between basic tactile play and the more structured creative potential of the DUPLO building platform.
The development of this set reflected the company's pedagogical shift toward inclusive, accessible play for younger children. The design prioritized safety and ergonomic handling, ensuring that each piece was durable enough for intensive institutional use while remaining lightweight. It received recognition within educational settings for its practical approach to fostering spatial awareness, serving as a foundational tool that encouraged collaborative building among young students before they transitioned to more complex sets.
