Where it came from
Released in 1961 as part of the early LEGO System of Play, the Town Plan Board (246-1) served as a foundation for builders to organize their city layouts. It was produced during a pivotal era for the company, as they transitioned from wooden toys to the plastic interlocking bricks that define the brand today. The board was designed to provide a structural base, featuring printed roads and building plots that helped children envision their creations within a cohesive urban environment.
The board was designed by the LEGO Group's internal development team during a period of rapid expansion in the European toy market. It was intended to introduce the concept of city planning and modular construction, encouraging users to expand their collection with additional sets from the Town line. Upon its release, it was well-received as an essential accessory, solidifying the idea that LEGO was not just a collection of parts, but a comprehensive system for building structured worlds.
