Where it came from
Released in the early 1960s, the LEGO Town Plan Board (Set 200-4) was a foundational accessory designed to bring spatial context to the burgeoning LEGO System of Play. As the company transitioned from simple brick sets to more comprehensive city-building themes, this heavy-duty cardboard sheet served as the baseplate for budding urban planners. It featured printed illustrations of roads, parking lots, and landscaping, providing a structured environment that encouraged children to integrate their individual buildings into a cohesive miniature metropolis.
The board was designed during a period when LEGO was expanding its reach across Continental Europe, aiming to compete with traditional tabletop train sets and model kits. By using cardboard, LEGO provided an accessible and affordable play surface that effectively defined the scale for early town sets. It was well-received by parents for its ability to organize play areas and by children for providing a realistic canvas, eventually influencing the development of the more durable plastic road baseplates that would define the city theme in subsequent decades.
